So, it’s been a minute. Apologies.
Today, I thought it would it be fun to share a Conversation Starter game known as “High Low Buffalo.” No one seems to know its origins, so I can’t give credit. But I did discover it from Vinh Giang, a communication skills expert and magician. No, that’s not a typo. You can watch his 6-minute video on HLB here:
High Low Buffalo
The game is rather simple: participants share something that is going great in their lives (HIGH), something that’s not going so well (LOW), followed by something interesting or unexpected about themselves (BUFFALO).
Usually, I’m somewhat private and reserved. I’m also an introvert, so I’m a little surprised to be doing this, but here goes…
My High
I’m finally sleeping well and feel rested again!
I have sleep apnea. It is severe. I’ve been told I will always have it because of the shape of my mouth and the size of my tongue. Sounds like I should be in a KISS cover band.
My old CPAP machine exceeded its life expectancy, so I had to retest and get a new one. The new machine is far better than the old one. It has Bluetooth and an app! Doctors can review data and make changes remotely. Good thing, because I had a rough month getting adjusted to the new therapy. My AHI (a measurement used to determine the average number of times per hour one stops breathing) was erratic.
The goal is to get that AHI number down to a 5 or less. My lowest number was an 8. The highest? 17. Now, that’s still much better than my numbers without any machine. Those numbers were scary.
The doctor made some changes, and I’ve been doing great ever since. It took a couple of weeks to make up my sleep deficit, but now I feel like myself again. Sleep (or lack of) impacts so many other things.
That 07:59 (woke without an alarm) really bugs me. I couldn’t wait one more minute to have an even 8 hours’ sleep? Come on!
My Low
I’m looking to make a change professionally, but have no idea what that is or what it would even look like.
My path and skills haven’t followed a traditional trajectory. I’m a writer, teacher, designer, web developer, photographer, marketer, and copywriter… with a degree in Bible and Theology. That’s quite a mixed bag! Skills that could be applied almost anywhere… and nowhere? I have no idea where to start. I’m lost, and wandering.
My Buffalo
I have blasted a leaf blower in Mark Cuban’s face and lived to tell about it.
Final Thoughts
High Low Buffalo is a fun way to get to know people a little better. We can choose what and how much we share, but we’re also moving beyond “How are you? Good.”
Maybe I will revisit this once a month or so?

Thanks for sharing your HLB! For me... H: I'm thrilled to have booked a commercial (as an actor) which shoots this Friday, and will help pay rent for a month. (It's for a blood glucose monitor!) L: I'm also needing some additional income, and feel a bit paralyzed by it. B: When I studied in Copenhagen in college, I sang & played piano in a small bar every Wednesday night. I was "Mark from USA" (!) and it gave me some extra cash and helped me work on my Danish.
